“You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” Galatians 5:13
In the Bible, Jesus clearly shows us the will of the Father is for us to serve one another, whether abroad on a mission trip or in our hometowns. (“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me,” Matthew 25:40) However, it’s easy sometimes, for me, who has only experienced the latter, to fall into the pit of habit. Volunteer at VBS, put together Thanksgiving baskets, give money to charity, repeat. While every one of these things is wonderful, I’ve realized that none are very hard for me. I’ve never truly sacrificed anything to serve. This year, I have felt that God is calling me to serve Him and His children in a way that requires sacrifice. As I touched on before, I have participated in volunteer work many times, and while it was always very good and many benefited from it, I have never truly given up anything in order to serve them, other than time, which is not of much consequence.
Going on this trip to Kenya requires me to give something else up, which, while it is not something of great importance in the grand scheme of things, is disheartening to miss. However, because I believe this is God’s plan for me this summer, I know that it is for a reason, and a good one. I can already see how God has given me the gifts necessary, like my love for children. While on the trip, we will be hosting a VBS at the local church, which will also use my love for theater, song, and dance. And my age will help me to connect with the high school girls in ways others can’t. I can’t wait to see what God will do!
“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, 'Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?' And I said, 'Here I am. Send me!'" Isaiah 6:8
